You must absolutely check authenticity of the ISO file you’ve just downloaded. Doing so will confirm that it hasn’t been modified by anyone, that it’s clean from spywares and viruses, and that it is free from corruption or any transfer error.

To confirm the authenticity of the ISO file you downloaded, all you have to do is to make sure that it is exactly (bit for bit) the same as the one Microsoft provides. We can know that two files are identical by matching their hashes. The hash of a file is the result of its calculation. Each file has a unique hash, if the file is modified (even only by 1 bit) then its hash will be completely different.

Like many software editors, Microsoft provides hashes for all their softwares, which allow to authenticate them as genuine. The hashes we’re looking for are available directly here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/downloads

Match one of the hashes (either MD5 or SHA-1) of your version (32 or 64 bits) using HashCheck ( direct download — ) or any other hash calculator, and make sure that the ISO file you’ve downloaded is exactly the same as the one provided by Microsoft.

Check the authenticity of the ISO image that you have downloaded

Download and install HashCheck.

Right-click on the ISO image that you’ve downloaded and open Properties.

Select the Checksums tab and wait until the HASH is calculated.

Copy and past one of the HASHES released by Microsoftin the search field:

Windows 7 32 bits: D0B8B407E8A3D4B75EE9C10147266B89

Windows 7 64 bits: F43D22E4FB07BF617D573ACD8785C028

If found, the ISO is exactly the same as the one released by Microsoft. If not found, then download Windows 7 again.

Currently Build 8102 does not require activation but on the slim chance that you are asked for a product key, this is the key that is installed automatically on installation: 6RH4V-HNTWC-JQKG8-RFR3R-36498
If you have happened to of downloaded the server version of Windows Developer Preview, which is not included in this guide, the key is: 4Y8N3-H7MMW-C76VJ-YD3XV-MBDKV

Microsoft is promising us performance improvements with the upcoming Windows 8 and while the new OS may still be in its beginning, it appears to be living up to these claims. I have been doing some tests and so far I am impressed, while I do love Linux systems I just can’t get away from the evil Windowz everyone claims Microsoft to be.

Microsoft offers students free XBOX with PC purchase

Microsoft is offering a deal to students on the edge of summer.

Starting May 22, students who buy a new PC for $699 or more will receive a free Xbox 360 4GB console, the software giant said in a blog post today. The offer is available to online shoppers who buy a PC from Dell.com, HP.com, or Microsoft’s online store. Those who want to head to a retail outlet can find the deal at Best Buy or Microsoft’s stores.

In order for students to get the free Xbox 360, they will need to have .edu e-mail address at the time of purchase. If they don’t have a .edu e-mail address, they can go to a retail store and present their student IDs.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 4GB console currently retails for $200. The hardware features built-in Wi-Fi and comes with a black Xbox 360 wireless controller. Those who want additional storage will need to buy a hard drive separately.

The Xbox 360 has been performing exceptionally well at retail as of late. According to research firm NPD, the software giant sold 297,000 Xbox 360 units in April and bested Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo’s Wii. Microsoft said that the Xbox 360 has been the best-selling console in 10 of the last 11 months.

Microsoft’s free Xbox 360 offer is valid through September 3, or while supplies last. The offer will be coming to Canada and France “soon,” Microsoft said.

My guide to a home theater PC reveals what components you should buy and how you should set them up

I updated this post, please look below for my additional comments.

At its core, the home-theater dream can be distilled as follows: We want our movies to feel as cinematic as possible. And we want to be able to record and watch as many shows as possible on the biggest-possible TV screen. Well I am here to show you everything you will need to accomplish this task. I am going to break down the parts list to my build.

Here is the parts list and I have completed the build, after careful consideration on what operating system to use, since Windows 7 is the only way to use the Ceton cable card tuner, I went with Windows 7 Professional 64bit oem. Remember that when you buy your computer parts and you exceed the 4 gig memory limit you will want to drop that 32bit O/S and jump up to the 64bit version.

UPDATE

After several months of using my new system I found the build to be very stable, some of the tweaks I have done have made the experience an overall great success on how the system performs.

Recommended Software

I have a list of software I always use with any Media Center build

Anydvd HD from Slysoft- I use this to rip my DVD and Blu-Ray collection to disk, this gives me the ability to view my entire collection with just a few remote clicks
My Movies- This software organize all my DVD Blu-Ray collection within the Media Center interface.
Total Media Theatre 5- This software is used to play you Blu-Ray rips within Media Center, this software does alot more than this but this is the function I use it for since Media Center natively plays pretty much everything else with out other codecs.

Hard Drive Performance and System Performance

The system itself has performed quite well as you can see from my benchmark results, I do like the Windows Experience because it gives you a basic rating system that you can monitor from time to time to see if any hardware is not working correctly. The hard drive test I use the ATTO benchmark tool that be downloaded for free at ATTO LINK

Electrical Surges in the Home

It’s that time of year again when those storms come rolling through ready to knock out all your computer and electronic equipment. What do you do when all your gadgets are at risk from an early grave? Some of the things I like to do is go around unplugging all the gadgets I can but this is just me and I probably love my gadgets a bit more than most people, so what should you do if you don’t have that option of running around the home?

What Are Power (Voltage) Surges?

A power surge is one form of electrical power disturbance. There are four main types of power disturbances:

Voltage dips (also called “sags” or “brownouts”)
Electromagnetic interference
Radio frequency interference
Power surges (also referred to as “voltage surges” or “transient voltages”)

Power surges are generally considered to be the most destructive of the four types of electrical power disturbances.

Power surges are spikes in voltage.

They are very brief, usually lasting millionths of a second. Power surges can vary in duration and magnitude, varying from a few hundred volts to several thousand volts.

No matter where you live, your home experiences power surges.

Tips on How to Prevent Electrical Surge Damage

Use an Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) for computer equipment and sensitive components

In addition to whole house surge protection, use quality power strips/ surge protectors for computers

Ensure surge protection devices are Underwriters Laboratories (UL) rated. Look for “UL” on packaging

Buy the best quality you can afford. Surge protection extends the life of components and computers

If unprotected from surges, unplug sensitive computers and electrical devices during lightning storms

Use a power conditioning/surge suppressor unit for home theater protection

Install a whole house surge protector

After researching for hours I found myself buying a few things after losing my Home Theater Computer which is going to set me back about 2 grand I think I will spend the 300 on a hole house surge protector.
